This is us...

Shunned at a Funeral is a neo-rock Christian project based in Southern Oregon, blending frontier-style banjo grit, cinematic rock, and genre-crossing fire with a bold, spiritually anchored sound. Formed in 2023, the project exists to proclaim deep theological truth through powerful lyrics, soaring melodies, and frontier-inspired musical storytelling — all crafted to magnify the glory of God.
At its core is a founding musician who has played guitar for more than 25 years. As his progressive visual impairment made live performance impossible, the path forward looked like silence — until modern creative tools opened a different door. What could have ended the music instead transformed it: through new production methods and modeling technologies, he can still bring to life the sound, soul, and Scripture-rooted imagination that once lived only on stage or in his hands. Shunned at a Funeral is the continuation of that calling, not the end of it — and truly, this is the only way a project like this could exist.
And in a moment where “AI bands” appear overnight — projects built by typing a prompt and calling it a song — we want to be clear: this is not that. The music you hear begins with real musicianship, decades of guitar experience, intentional songwriting, trained melodic instinct, biblical study, and storytelling shaped by a lifetime in the faith. Technology here isn’t a shortcut; it’s a prosthetic — a tool enabling creativity that could no longer be performed live because of disability. It is a hybrid approach, but one with a human heartbeat, a history, and a genuine artistic voice behind every note.
This project isn’t driven by fame, platform, vanity, or any pursuit of personal glory. It exists solely to point back to Christ, to His gospel, and to the Word that outshines every artist. The creative work behind Shunned at a Funeral is simply an act of obedience — using whatever remains in the hands to honor the One who gave the gift in the first place.
Shunned at a Funeral stands firmly on the foundations of the Christian faith:
the authority of Scripture, salvation through Christ alone, grace that transforms, and truth that convicts while offering hope. The songs confront cultural confusion, comfort the broken, challenge shallow religion, and call listeners back to the clarity and beauty of the gospel.
Every track is written to do two things:
move the listener musically — through frontier riffs, soaring rock choruses, cinematic strings, and bold rhythmic storytelling —
and
move the heart spiritually — toward worship, courage, repentance, and a deeper love for Christ.
This is Shunned at a Funeral:
A creative frontier.
A theological voice.
A mission born from limitation, redeemed into purpose.
Not made for applause — made for truth.
And a proclamation that even when the world rejects it…
the Gospel still sings.
Why the Name?
Years before the band formed, the founding member and creative force behind the group fell into sin. It was a painful, humbling time. And yet, in the midst of failure, the love of Christ was shown. His parents, friends, and spiritual mentors came alongside him—not with condemnation, but with the spirit of Galatians 6:1:

“Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.”

They walked with him through repentance, reminding him of the cross and of the grace freely given to all who turn back to the Father. But not everyone chose restoration. Despite being professing believers, his brothers stopped speaking to him. Even at the funeral of their grandmother—who had long prayed that the family would be healed—they publicly shunned him.
The name Shunned at a Funeral was born from that day. But it is not a name of bitterness. It is a banner for grace. It reminds us that even when people hold grudges, our God does not. The same God who split the Red Sea and raised the dead also says:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace.” – Romans 3:23–24
We sing about redemption, forgiveness, and restoration because we’ve lived it. We've experienced the embrace of a Savior who runs to us when we’re still far off (Luke 15). We’ve also wept from the sting of those who, like the unforgiving servant in Matthew 18:21–35, have been forgiven much but refused to forgive little.
And yet, we forgive them.
Because grace is not something we hoard—it’s something we pass on.
Jesus said,

“For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” – Matthew 6:14
“But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” – Matthew 6:15
So if you're reading this and you're struggling—with shame, sin, broken relationships, or silence from people you once loved—please reach out to us. You are not alone. We mean it. Use the contact information. We will walk with you, just like others walked with us.
This band exists for soli Deo gloria—for the glory of God alone. And we believe with all our hearts that Grandma D would be proud today, not because we made music, but because we made much of the mercy of Jesus.

From ruin, God brought beauty.
From silence, He gave us songs.
From being shunned… came grace.
And now, the funeral has become a beginning.

What We Believe
Statement of Faith

We, the members of Shunned at a Funeral, firmly hold and joyfully declare these foundational truths as the heartbeat of our faith:

God’s Sovereignty:
We believe in the one true and living God, sovereign Creator and Sustainer of all things, who reigns supremely over all creation, orchestrating all things according to His perfect, eternal plan for His glory and the good of His people.

Scripture Alone:
We affirm the Bible as the inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word of God, fully sufficient and authoritative for all matters of faith, practice, and life. Scripture alone guides our understanding of truth and shapes our devotion.

Christ Alone:
We proclaim Jesus Christ as fully God and fully man, born of a virgin, living a sinless life, dying on the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice for sin, rising physically and victoriously from the grave, and ascending into heaven where He reigns and intercedes for His church.

Grace Alone, Faith Alone:
We declare that salvation is entirely by the sovereign grace of God, received through faith alone in Christ alone. Human works, merit, or efforts play no role in our justification, which is a gracious gift from God.

To the Glory of God Alone:
We live, serve, and worship for the glory of God alone. The proclamation of the gospel to all nations, peoples, and tongues is central to our calling, seeking the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom through faithful witness and discipleship.

The Return of Christ and Final Judgment:
We confidently await the personal, visible, and bodily return of the Lord Jesus Christ, who will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. On that day, He will fully establish His righteous reign and usher in the promised new heavens and new earth, a place free from sin, suffering, and death.
We hold these truths with conviction and humility, desiring that our music, message, and lives reflect the profound depth of these foundational beliefs.
